Description

A rural nocturnal landscape without a formal title, characteristic of Hasui's exploration of the Japanese countryside after dark. The composition likely features a farmhouse, snow-covered fields, or a moonlit path through a village. Hasui's night scenes typically employ deep graduated indigo washes (bokashi) to convey the cool darkness of the countryside, with soft pools of lamplight or reflected moonlight providing tonal contrast. This type of atmospheric nocturne demonstrates the Watanabe workshop's printing techniques, particularly the layered gradations achievable on damp washi paper using a baren. The absence of human figures, a recurrent device in Hasui's work, directs attention toward the landscape's mood and texture rather than narrative activity. Within the shin-hanga tradition, untitled or sketchbook-derived subjects document Hasui's travels through rural Japan beyond the well-known pilgrimage and tourist circuits.
