Description

Urahama on the Echigo coast (Niigata Prefecture) is a stretch of sandy shore facing the Sea of Japan, backed by the low coastal dunes and pine windbreaks typical of the Niigata shoreline. This 1921 print from the Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series shows the open sea coast in a summer condition — the flat, grey-green Sea of Japan stretching to the horizon, the sandy shore in the foreground. The Echigo coastline's combination of simplicity and exposure suited Hasui's skill with horizontal seascape compositions.
