Description
Shinbashi at night — the second print in a set of six documenting Ginza and its environs — captures the entertainment district that had served as Tokyo's first major pleasure zone since the Meiji period. Shinbashi in the late Taisho and early Showa era was still a central destination for Tokyo's middle class, its restaurants, geisha establishments, and theaters drawing evening crowds that Kazuma renders through the warm glow of electric light on wet nighttime streets, the characteristic atmosphere of his most evocative nocturnal prints.
