Snow and night scenes traditionally command higher prices. Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
Ginza at night — the great commercial boulevard illuminated by its famous electric signs and shop lights, the crowd of evening visitors filling the broad sidewalks — was one of Kazuma's defining subjects. His nocturnal Ginza prints capture the specific quality of the district in the interwar period: the excitement of modern urban illumination combined with the distinctly Japanese social ritual of the Ginza promenade. The wet street reflections, the warm amber of shop interiors, and the moving crowd create the characteristic atmosphere of his finest urban nocturnes.
