Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
Ijin Pond in Niigata Prefecture, viewed in autumn with its surrounding foliage reflected in still water, offered Kazuma one of his finest subjects for the luminous atmospheric effects he achieved in color lithography. The pond's surface becomes a mirror for the autumn colors above — the brilliant reds and golds of the surrounding trees doubled and slightly softened in reflection. From his 1929 "Scenery of Niigata" series, the print demonstrates how Kazuma applied his French-influenced sensibility to Japanese subjects, the autumn lake scene given the atmospheric poetry of a Western Impressionist composition.
