Description

Shinobazu Pond in Ueno — the urban lake in the middle of the Ueno district that supports a lotus-covered surface in summer and freezes partially in cold winters — is seen here from around 1930 in a typically evocative composition. The pond's relationship to the surrounding city, with its famous shrine island at the center and the Ueno hills rising behind, offered Kazuma the combination of natural water and urban setting that he found most productive. The late spring or summer lotus would give way to the bare winter surface he also captured in other prints.
