Hanga
Untitled (kazuma-oda) by Oda Kazuma — Japanese Woodblock print

Untitled (kazuma-oda)

by Oda Kazuma

Medium:
Woodblock print

Description

An eighteenth undocumented print from Kazuma, unidentified as to title and subject. His work as a sosaku-hanga pioneer meant that he was among the first Japanese printmakers to conceive of the print as a personal artistic statement rather than a commercial product, and even unidentified works from his hand carry this intention. The print would bear the marks of his direct engagement with his subject — observed rather than borrowed, recorded with the immediacy of personal encounter.
