Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
An eighteenth undocumented print from Kazuma, unidentified as to title and subject. His work as a [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) pioneer meant that he was among the first Japanese printmakers to conceive of the print as a personal artistic statement rather than a commercial product, and even unidentified works from his hand carry this intention. The print would bear the marks of his direct engagement with his subject — observed rather than borrowed, recorded with the immediacy of personal encounter.
