Description
The Wadakura Gate (Wadakura-mon) of the former Edo Castle — now the Imperial Palace East Garden in Tokyo — appears in this print from an unidentified series. The gate, one of the surviving Edo-period structures within the palace grounds, offered Kazuma a subject combining history, architecture, and the particular quality of light that falls on ancient stonework and wooden gates. The moat surrounding the palace grounds provided the water-and-architecture combination that was among his most reliable compositional formulas.
