Description
"The Embrace" is one of Kobayakawa's most intimate and unusual subjects for a bijin-ga: two figures in physical contact, the embrace itself made the central compositional fact. Where most bijin-ga presented single women as objects of admiration, Kobayakawa here depicts the relational — bodies engaged with each other rather than displayed for the viewer. The composition likely focuses on the intertwined forms of the two figures, using the same close-focus approach he brought to facial features.
