Description
Printed in early 1895, this triptych shows Japanese forces braving a snowstorm to storm and capture the coastal fortifications at Weihaiwei — one of the climactic actions of the First Sino-Japanese War. Kiyochika rendered winter warfare on the Shandong coast through the lens of his established compositional vocabulary: dark figures against a white field, smoke and snow indistinguishable at distance, artillery flashes cutting through the blizzard. The print was among several Weihaiwei subjects he produced in rapid succession as the battle's outcome became clear.
