Captain Kani Ichita appears in this January 1895 military portrait as one of the celebrated individual heroes of the First Sino-Japanese War. Kiyochika's series of officer portraits, issued in rapid succession during the 1894–95 campaign, served both as visual news coverage and as collectible memorials for a public following the war through daily press dispatches. The nishiki-e format gave these portraits a vivid colour intensity that newspaper illustration of the era could not match.
