Description
The title 雨晴 (amenobare, clearing after rain) signals that Kiyochika's primary subject here is the atmospheric moment of a storm passing — the brightening sky, wet surfaces reflecting returning light, and the transition between darkness and clarity. Zenkoji Temple in Kawaguchi, south of central Tokyo, provides the architectural anchor for this study in transient weather. Kiyochika excelled at depicting rain and its aftermath, exploiting the reflective surfaces and softened visibility that wet conditions produce. The clearing sky would be rendered with extended bokashi gradations from dark cloud to luminous break, while foreground surfaces — temple roofs, stone paths, puddles — would carry the blue-grey tones of recent rainfall. This subject exemplifies the meteorological specificity that distinguishes Kiyochika's meisho-e from those of his contemporaries.
