Colonel Kumamoto Masaji, commander of the Imperial Guard Artillery regiment, appears in this 1904 military portrait among Kiyochika's Russo-Japanese War hero series. The Imperial Guard units saw some of the heaviest fighting of the Manchurian campaign, and Kiyochika's portrait commemoration of their commanders served the same function as his earlier Sino-Japanese War portraits: translating press-reported heroism into a collectible visual format that the nishiki-e medium could reach mass audiences.
