Description
This senso-e depicts the individual heroism of Captain Asakawa during battle at Tuchengzi (土城子), a site of engagement during the First Sino-Japanese War. The print belongs to Kiyochika's prolific series of war reportage prints produced between 1894 and 1895, in which individual officers were identified by name and depicted in acts of conspicuous valor. The composition likely shows Asakawa in close combat or commanding under fire, rendered with the bold figural draftsmanship and dramatic color contrasts characteristic of Meiji war prints. These works drew on earlier musha-e conventions while incorporating Western-style anatomical rendering and perspective, reflecting the same cultural synthesis present in Kiyochika's urban subjects.
