Kiyochika situates the viewer on the Sumida River, looking west toward the wooded rise of Mount Matsuchi at Mimeguri Shrine. The 1884 nishiki-e captures the hazy atmosphere of the river at dusk, with moored barges and ferry craft dotting the foreground and the distant hill dissolving into mist. It is a characteristically contemplative Kiyochika landscape — the topography of a Tokyo that was rapidly being erased by Meiji-era construction and land reclamation.
