The battleship Hatsuse is shown battling through the harbour mouth at Port Arthur in this March 1904 nishiki-e, the scene lit by the flash of naval guns and the distant glow of burning shore installations. Kiyochika returns to the dramatic naval seascape format he had developed during the Sino-Japanese War, but with the larger modern warships of the Russo-Japanese era filling his compositions. The Hatsuse would be sunk by a Russian mine two months after this print was issued.
