The Sumida River at evening — its surface catching the last light of a sunset or the first glow of lanterns — is the subject of this undated landscape. Kiyochika produced many Sumida River views across his career, each finding a different quality of light on the water: this evening scene emphasises the river's expansive width and the low, atmospheric sky above it. The river was not merely a scenic subject for Kiyochika but the artery of the Tokyo he had grown up alongside and documented throughout his career.
