Description

This print is one of two known versions of the composition depicting Matsuchiyama (Matsuchi Hill) in Asakusa under snow in the second lunar month, indicated by the classical poetic term kisaragi in the title. Matsuchiyama, a low rise overlooking the Sumida River near the Shōden shrine complex, was a recognized meisho site with associations in poetry and earlier landscape prints. Kiyochika renders the hill under the particular atmospheric conditions of a snowy evening: bare trees holding accumulated snow, the muted tonal range produced by overcast winter light, and the silence that characterizes his most affecting cold-weather scenes. The sky would be rendered in pale, flat bokashi suggesting cloud cover rather than the dramatic chromatic transitions of his sunset prints. The existence of a second version implies differences in color application, sky treatment, or block state that alter the atmospheric reading. Snow subjects in Kiyochika's work emphasize absence and stillness rather than the decorative patterning found in earlier masters such as Hiroshige, reflecting his Western-influenced approach to atmospheric naturalism.
