The opening naval assault on Port Arthur in February 1904 — Japan's surprise torpedo attack on the Russian Pacific Squadron at anchor — is revisited in this March 1904 nishiki-e as a full-scale naval battle. The Great Naval Battle at Port Arthur, as the broader engagement was known, saw Japanese warships trading fire with Russian shore batteries and fleet units in conditions of considerable chaos. Kiyochika renders the smoke-filled harbour with the kinetic energy of shell splashes and listing warships that characterised his finest naval compositions.
