The fourth in a series of triptychs depicting the Battle of the Yellow Sea (September 1894), this 1894 nishiki-e shows Japanese warships engaging the Qing fleet amid towering columns of black smoke and cascading shell splashes. Kiyochika had by this point established himself as the pre-eminent woodblock artist of war imagery, his seascape compositions drawing on both Western naval illustration and the traditions of kabuki warrior prints. The triptych format allowed him to panoramically render the scale of modern naval combat.
