"Honorable Defeated General" is an October 1894 satirical print from Kiyochika's Nippon Banzai! series mocking Qing military commanders following Japan's string of victories in the war's opening months. The satirical target — a Chinese general in retreat from Japanese forces — is rendered with the comic deflation typical of the series: dignity punctured, authority made absurd. The print reflects the contemptuous confidence with which Meiji popular culture regarded Qing military capacity by autumn 1894.
