This 1895 triptych records the combined Japanese land and sea operation that opened the port of Weihaiwei on the Shandong peninsula. Troop transports and naval escort vessels stand offshore while infantry wade through surf onto the beach — a scene Kiyochika renders with the controlled drama of a theatrical set piece. The landing at Weihaiwei, which outflanked the remaining Qing naval defences, effectively ended the war, and this print captures the logistical confidence of the victorious Japanese military.
