Ishiwara Bridge at Ōkawabata — the "great river bank" stretch of the Sumida — is depicted in this 1880 nishiki-e with Kiyochika's characteristic attention to the quality of light on water and timber. The bridge's wooden structure casts a geometric shadow on the river surface while figures cross above, their movement implied rather than frozen. The Ōkawabata district was part of the eastern Sumida waterfront Kiyochika documented obsessively through the late 1870s and 1880s, preserving views of a Tokyo rapidly changing under Meiji-era development.
