Description
This print depicts the celebrated Itsukushima Shinto shrine complex on Miyajima island in Hiroshima Bay, one of Japan's most iconic sacred sites, renowned for the great vermilion torii gate that appears to float above the tidal flats at high water. As part of a series, the composition likely emphasizes the shrine's covered corridors extending over the sea, set against the forested slopes of Mount Misen. Kiyochika's characteristic use of atmospheric perspective and tonal gradation — achieved through the graded bokashi technique — would lend the scene a quality of misty coastal light distinct from the sharp outlines of the Hiroshige tradition. The print belongs to the meisho-e category of famous-place imagery, here applied to a site outside Kiyochika's more familiar Tokyo subject matter.
