Description
This print belongs to a series depicting Kameido Tenjin Shrine in the Kameido district of eastern Tokyo, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the learning deity Tenjin (Sugawara no Michizane) and famous for its wisteria gardens and arched drum bridges reflected in its ponds. The site had been a subject in earlier woodblock prints, including Hiroshige's Meisho Edo Hyakkei, but Kiyochika's treatment would emphasize nocturnal or crepuscular light — the shrine's lanterns and their reflections in still water being ideal material for his kosen-ga approach. The composition likely features the distinctive arched bridge or wisteria-draped trellises rendered with the atmospheric depth achieved through carefully graded bokashi printing. As part of a topographic series of Tokyo sites, it documents the persistence of traditional sacred spaces within the rapidly industrializing Meiji city.
