Kirino Toshiaki — a commander in the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877 who fought alongside Saigō Takamori against the Meiji government — is depicted in this 1877 print in the immediate aftermath of the rebellion's defeat. Kirino was killed at the Battle of Shiroyama in September 1877. Kiyochika's portrait of a rebel commander, issued in the year of his death, reflects the ambivalent public sympathy that accompanied the defeat of the last samurai uprising — mourning a lost world even while celebrating the modern state's victory.
