Lake Chūzenji at Nikkō — the high-altitude lake formed by a lava flow from Mount Nantai above the famous Tōshō-gū shrine complex — is depicted in this undated print from what appears to be a landscape series. The lake's serene surface, ringed by volcanic mountains and dense cedar forests, was a destination for aristocrats and diplomats who maintained villas on its shores throughout the Meiji era. Kiyochika's treatment emphasises the lake's reflective calm and the forested depth of the surrounding terrain.
