Lieutenant-Colonel Tomioka, commanding officer of the Eleventh Infantry Regiment, is commemorated in this February 1895 military portrait as one of the frontline commanders who directed the assault on Weihaiwei. The Eleventh Regiment was among the units assigned to the western Shandong peninsula campaign, and Tomioka's portrait was issued as Japanese forces were consolidating their hold on the Weihaiwei forts. Kiyochika's portrait series provides a contemporaneous visual record of the Sino-Japanese War's command structure.
