Description
Zōjō-ji — the great Jōdo sect temple in Shiba, south of central Tokyo — is shown at midday in this undated woodblock print, its massive South Main Gate (Sangedatsumon) catching the light of a clear afternoon sun. Zōjō-ji served as the funerary temple of the Tokugawa shoguns and one of Tokyo's most architecturally significant monuments; Kiyochika's midday treatment — unusual in a body of work dominated by nocturnal and twilight scenes — allows the temple's Baroque grandeur to emerge in full light.
