Imadobashi — a bridge over the Sanya Canal in the Imado district — is depicted at night with the tea houses along its banks illuminated by lantern light that reflects in the dark water below. The composition is among the most intimate of Kiyochika's bridge-and-water nocturnes: the human warmth of the tea house lanterns set against the cool darkness of the canal and the distant night sky. Imado was a working-class district with a lively riverfront entertainment trade, and Kiyochika captured it at the hour of its commercial life.
