Mount Fuji seen from Okitsu — a post town on the old Tōkaidō road where the highway ran close to the sea — is shown in the pale light of early morning, the mountain's cone rising above the coastal hills with a clarity that only comes with dawn's still air. The Japanese subtitle 興津の朝富士 names the viewpoint precisely, placing the print within a Fuji-viewing tradition that valued dawn sightings from the Tōkaidō stations. Kiyochika brings the same atmospheric sensitivity to this coastal Fuji view that he applied to his Sumida River night scenes.
