The Japanese naval bombardment of Vladivostok harbour in April 1904 — Japan's only direct strike at Russian Pacific ports on the Siberian coast — is depicted in this April 1904 nishiki-e. Japanese cruisers shelled the port installations from offshore, causing significant damage to the city. Kiyochika's composition shows shells bursting among the harbour facilities while Japanese warships maintain their formation offshore — a distant and impersonal form of warfare that the woodblock medium translates into dramatic visual terms.
