Description
General Nozu's Fourth Division advances through Liaoyang in clear weather following a snowfall — the sky washed clean, the terrain white beneath the soldiers' boots — in this January 1895 nishiki-e. Liaoyang was one of the strategic communications centres of southern Manchuria, and its threatened fall in early 1895 contributed to Qing willingness to negotiate. Kiyochika renders the post-snow clarity with the same sensitivity he brought to winter scenes in his Tokyo landscapes: the world simplified to white ground, dark figures, and a pale sky.
