The Japanese navy's bombardment of Dalian Bay (Talien Bay) in November 1894 — which preceded the landing at Dalian and the subsequent assault on Port Arthur — is depicted in this late-1894 nishiki-e. Japanese warships stand in formation offshore while shells arc toward the shore fortifications in a composition that emphasises the mechanical precision of modern naval gunnery. Dalian Bay's capture gave Japan a deep-water anchorage on the Liaodong Peninsula that proved strategically decisive.
