The amphibious operation at Rongcheng Bay in January 1895 — the landing that opened Japan's Shandong campaign against Weihaiwei — is depicted in this nishiki-e as troops wade ashore from transport vessels in winter surf. The Rongcheng landing, executed in freezing conditions on China's northern coast, gave Japan the overland approach route to Weihaiwei's rear defences. Kiyochika renders the operation with the organisational clarity of his best amphibious compositions: ships offshore, small boats ferrying troops, soldiers advancing inland.
