Taira no Tadamori — the 12th-century warrior who captured what he believed to be a supernatural flame-priest near the Midō (Rokuhara) temple — is depicted in this circa-1884 nishiki-e in the moment of his famous intervention. The story, which ends with Tadamori's "ghost" revealed to be a frightened temple attendant carrying an oil lamp in the rain, was a celebrated tale of samurai discernment and loyalty. Kiyochika renders the scene's tense confrontation in the dramatically lit nocturnal setting the story demanded.
