The great Japanese victory at Pyeongyang in September 1894 — achieved through a coordinated multi-directional assault that overwhelmed the Qing garrison — is depicted in this October 1894 nishiki-e as Japanese troops celebrate their capture of the Korean city. The Battle of Pyeongyang was the decisive land engagement of the war's Korean phase, breaking Qing control of the peninsula and opening the road to Manchuria. Kiyochika's composition emphasises the triumphant aftermath rather than the fighting itself.
