The opening naval battle of the First Sino-Japanese War — the engagement off Pungdo (Asan Bay) in Korea that sank the British-chartered Kowshing and triggered the formal declaration of war — is depicted in this August 1894 nishiki-e. The Pungdo encounter, in which Japanese cruisers intercepted a Qing reinforcement convoy, was technically a pre-declaration action and its legality was debated internationally; Kiyochika's print presents it as straightforward naval victory.
