Rain falls on the three-plank bridge (Sanmai-bashi) at Hakone — a famous crossing on the mountain pilgrimage routes through the Hakone volcanic plateau — in this circa-1881 nishiki-e. The rain-soaked mountain landscape, with the bridge reflected in the pooled water below, demonstrates Kiyochika applying his Tokyo rain-scene technique to the volcanic terrain of Hakone: cedar forests, stone-banked mountain streams, and the grey sky of the mountain passes. The print is among his most atmospheric landscape subjects outside Tokyo.
