"Rapid Progress" is a February 1895 nishiki-e likely from Kiyochika's Nippon Banzai! satirical series, the title reflecting the velocity of Japan's military advance in the war's final months: the fall of Weihaiwei, the Taiwan landings, and the approach of peace negotiations all unfolding in rapid succession. The satirical framing of Japan's military efficiency as "rapid progress" drew on the Meiji period's broader discourse of bunmei kaika (civilisation and enlightenment) — the nation's self-conscious modernisation projected onto the battlefield.
