Description
Sailor Third Class Nishikawa Hatsutarō of the warship Katsuragi is commemorated in this May 1895 nishiki-e among the individual heroes of the First Sino-Japanese War that Kiyochika depicted throughout 1894–95. The Katsuragi was a Japanese cruiser that participated in the Yellow Sea engagements and the Weihaiwei operations, and a sailor's individual heroism noted in ship's logs or press dispatches could earn him a place in Kiyochika's portrait series. The print demonstrates how the war hero commemoration genre extended from officers to enlisted men.
