Description

Surugachō (駿河町), a major commercial street in Nihonbashi where the Mitsui Dry Goods Store occupied a prominent position, was one of Edo and early Meiji Tokyo's most celebrated urban vistas, long associated with views of Mount Fuji aligned along its straight thoroughfare. Kiyochika's snow composition depicts the street under winter conditions, with the accumulated white of rooftops, awnings, and the road surface creating a high-keyed tonal field against which shop signage and pedestrian figures are silhouetted. The receding perspective of the street toward Fuji — visible or implied in the distance — structures the composition spatially. Kiyochika's handling of overcast winter light, achieved through flat washi grounds and restrained color application, distinguishes this from Hiroshige's earlier treatments of the same site, emphasizing atmospheric diffusion over decorative pattern.
