Description
This print, the first in Kiyochika's series depicting Ueno's Tōshōgū Shrine under snow (上野東照宮積雪之図), presents the Edo-period shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu as it appeared in the early Meiji era within the newly established Ueno Park. The shrine's ornate karamon gate, gilded details, and the long avenue of stone lanterns donated by feudal lords provided Kiyochika with an architecturally dense subject. Snow obscures and equalizes these surfaces, reducing the rich polychrome of the shrine's decoration to a near-monochromatic composition of grays, whites, and the dark tones of the wooden structural members. Kiyochika applies subtle bokashi gradation in the sky to suggest overcast winter light, a condition that eliminates cast shadows and produces the even illumination characteristic of his snow-scene compositions. The absence of harsh directional light distinguishes these works from his more dramatic night and lamplight pictures.
