Description
A variant impression of the Mukojima winter evening composition, likely representing a different state or edition from the same series of Tokyo atmospheric views. Kiyochika returned repeatedly to nocturnal snow scenes along the Sumida River corridor, using the subject to explore how artificial and natural light behave differently when filtered through falling or accumulated snow. The Mukojima environs, a low-lying area of market gardens and temples northeast of central Tokyo, provided a semi-rural margin where traditional architecture and Meiji-era gas lighting coexisted. Variations in bokashi gradation and ink density between impressions reflect the hand-printing process and the judgment of individual craftsmen working the baren across dampened washi.
