"Surrender Prologue in a Qing Kyōgen Play" is a March 1895 satirical print from Kiyochika's war series, framing the Qing peace overtures at Shimonoseki as a comic theatrical performance in the farcical kyōgen tradition. The conceit of Qing submission as an inept theatrical prologue allowed Kiyochika to simultaneously mock China's defeat and celebrate Japan's diplomatic victory through the lens of traditional comedy. The print was issued as the Treaty of Shimonoseki negotiations were underway or concluded, its satirical content timely to a degree only rapid woodblock production could achieve.
