Description
Snow scenes of Tokyo streets gave Kiyochika the opportunity to explore the diffusion of pale winter light across urban surfaces, a subject well suited to his kosen-ga approach. This print likely depicts a Meiji-era thoroughfare—perhaps in the Ginza, Nihonbashi, or Asakusa districts—under snowfall or after accumulation, with gas lamps, telegraph poles, or Western-style brick buildings signaling the transformed cityscape alongside traditional wooden townhouses. The white of the washi paper stands for snow without the addition of white pigment, preserving its natural luminosity. Figures in both Western clothing and traditional kimono may move through the scene, reflecting the mixed dress of the Meiji transition period. Bokashi gradations in the sky suggest overcast conditions, and Kiyochika's studied rendering of atmospheric moisture in cold air gives the composition its characteristic quiet.
