This 1894 [triptych](/glossary/triptych) — whose Japanese title Ryojun-dō Kinshujō sen translates as "Battle at Kinshujō on the way to Ryojun [Port Arthur]" — depicts the engagement at the fortified town of Jinzhou during Japan's advance down the Liaodong Peninsula. The battle at Kinzhoucheng in November 1894 was the last major defensive action before Port Arthur itself, and Kiyochika's triptych captures the storm of the outer positions. The rocky terrain of the Liaodong Peninsula gave his composition a landscape drama distinct from the Korean and Manchurian subjects.
