This 1894 [triptych](/glossary/triptych) depicting the Anjō River crossing — Anjō o watari shingeki no zu, "Picture of crossing Anjō and proceeding in battle" — documents the same Ansong River ford engagement depicted in Kiyochika's multiple Asan Battle compositions. The ford crossing in late July 1894, when Japanese troops crossed under fire to engage Qing forces on the Korean bank, was one of the war's opening tactical engagements. This triptych version emphasises the forward momentum of the crossing — troops pressing through water toward battle — rather than the defensive fire they faced.
