Titled Hyaku-shaku Gaisho kōgeki no zu — "Attack on the Hundred-Foot Cliff" — this 1895 triptych depicts the assault on a fortified cliff position at Weihaiwei during the First Sino-Japanese War. Kiyochika renders Japanese infantry scaling the steep face under fire, their figures silhouetted against a smoke-filled sky. The composition dramatises the physical difficulty of storming fortified coastal positions, a recurring theme in his Sino-Japanese War imagery.
