Two elegantly dressed women — bijin in the tradition of Utamaro and Eisen — pause among spring blossoms in this undated woodblock print. Kiyochika produced relatively few bijin-ga in comparison to his landscape and war imagery, making this departure notable. The figures are rendered with careful attention to kimono pattern and coiffure, set against a blooming background that roots the image in the seasonal tradition of hanami compositions while displaying Kiyochika's characteristic interest in light falling on fabric and skin.
